PhilAT Preparation
Who needs to sit the PhilAT?
The PhilAT is a one-hour assessment focused on evaluating a candidate’s ability to reason philosophically. No formal background in philosophy is required, as it does not assess specific philosophical knowledge. Typically, you will engage in a comprehension task and write a brief essay or respond to a structured question.
Candidates are expected to complete Part A, which includes one question, and select one question from Part B. Each of these two questions carries equal importance, so it’s advisable to allocate half of your time to each.
All individuals applying for Philosophy and Theology must take the Philosophy Test (PhilAT).
If your application is for Philosophy, Psychology, and Linguistics (PPL) or Philosophy, Politics, and Economics (PPE), only the TSA is necessary.
For those applying to any Philosophy and Modern Languages program at Oxford, you will need to complete the relevant sections of the MLAT. Keep in mind that the Philosophy portion of the MLAT aligns with the PhilAT, but registration must be done for the MLAT.
We highly recommend reviewing all available past papers and resources found under the Test preparation and practice materials section. Since the test’s format and content remain unchanged, existing online resources and previous papers are still beneficial for preparation.
This admissions test at Oxford is now conducted on a computer, and you will need to schedule it at a Pearson VUE authorized testing center. You can find instructions for registration under the “How do I register?” section on the Oxford University website.

Why Choose Step Into My Shoes?
- To the best of our knowledge, we are the only private providers of admissions test preparation courses in the UK across several weeks. We believe that spreading classes across multiple weeks rather than cramming material into a weekend session or day, is the best and most effective way of preparing students for the test. All the science behind revision suggests we are right.
- Our course preparation includes a focus on test strategy and technique.
- We believe in homework and that students learn best by doing. Our curated handouts are designed to help students digest and master the concepts learned in the classroom through further practice at home.
- We believe in the benefits of group study. It allows for differing approaches and knowledge to be shared broadening one’s understanding of a subject and enhancing thinking skills. This is also particularly useful for students sitting subject interviews at a later date.
